Have you ever felt lonely? I am sure the answer to this is, yes. We have all felt loneliness at some point in our lives. As human beings, we need to feel connected to one another on some level or other. Some of us feel a strong desire to be in the company of others, yet others are happy in their own company.

So why is it that some people are happy to be alone but others feel lonely? Loneliness can come from a time in your past when something happened that made you feel lost and alone. This can resurface later in life. It can also come from a deep rooted feeling of not belonging which can live in your very soul.

The fact is, we are already connected. Every cell of our bodies, speaks to the cells of everything around us simultaneously. When we feel lonely, this connection is out of balance.

How To Be Happy In Your Own Company

  • Distract Yourself. The trick is to change the feeling of loneliness to one of solitude where you are comfortable being alone. Have something to do while you are alone to distract you. Take up knitting, painting, listen to music that makes you happy.  Dance! Having an activity to concentrate on will give you a feeling of achievement.
  • Acknowledge that you are lonely. Sometimes just realising the feeling and giving it a name can help you shake it off. By recognising that what you are feeling is loneliness, you can make the decision to change it. It gives you more control of your feelings. It is however, important not to affirm your loneliness but to take action to change.
  • Connect with your fellow humans once in a while. No-one can do this for you – you need to go out and get it. If you are shy there are ways of dealing with that too.
  • Practice meditation. When you meditate, you bring your attention to the here and now, you find peace within and you breathe more easily.

When you are able to feel happy in your own company and no longer feel lonely you will be amazed at the opportunities that open up for you. Amazingly, when you accept that being alone isn’t so bad, you will find that people call, invite you for coffee or just drop round to say hello. That’s just the way the universe works.
